LAKE SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A pair of individual top-10 finishes in the 50-competitor field helped the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team to a third place finish at the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Invite, held Feb. 29-March 1 at St. Mark's Golf Club. In the two-round tournament, CMS (623) finished ahead of five other schools and behind first-place Point Loma (604) and host San Marcos (617), both NCAA Division II programs.
CMS posted a 317 in the first round and sat in a tie for third place. The second day saw CMS improve by 11 shots as a team to finish seven shots ahead of fourth place Victoria (B.C.). Three of the five Athenas who competed scored lower rounds on the second day.
Sophomore Margaret Loncki (CMC) posted a 76 and 71 for CMS and finished in a tie for second place (3-over par, 147) in the tournament, seven strokes behind individual medalist Haleigh Krause from San Diego State University. Loncki's 1-under par, second round of 71 ended up being the second-lowest round for any competitor in the tournament.
Nine strokes behind Loncki came freshman Mary Bryan Owen (CMC) in a tie for ninth place (156). She had the second-lowest round of the tournament for CMS, a second round, 3-over par, 75. Back-to-back rounds of 80 helped sophomore Maya Bhat (CMC) secure a tie for 17th. Freshman Kelly Ransom (CMC) tied for 27th (163) and sophomore Cara Brinster (CMC) finished two shots behind Ransom at 31st (165).
After a week-plus layoff, the Athenas return to competition on March 14-15 at the Cal Lu Invitational played at Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
