CHINO HILLS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team extended their lead in the conference standings up to 28 strokes over the University of Redlands in the first day of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. Freshman Taylor Hughes (CMC) leads the field after posting a 73 on the day.
The SCIAC Championships started on a bright and sunny day at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. While the wind gave many players a difficult time, the Athenas shot a 306 as a team to take a commanding lead of the tournament, and more importantly the conference standings.
Hughes entered the day as the No. 6 player for CMS and was in the first group off the tee on the North Course. During the round, she made four birdies and was 1-under on the back nine. All three freshman Athenas birdied the 15th hole as Hughes was joined by Eunice Song (CMC) and Emma Kang (CMC).
Kang was 3-over after the first nine and then delivered seven pars on the back nine to end up shooting a 75, which was good for third place. Similarly, Loncki slid into the turn with a trio of bogeys but then rallied for a 38 coming in. Junior Cara Brinster (CMC) followed Kang's lead with a majority of pars on the back nine but then struggled on the 18th to end up 8-over on the day.
All four of the CMS players that counted toward the team score currently sit in the top-10.
Tomorrow, CMS will pair with Redlands, Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran with the first group teeing off at 10 a.m.
