CMS Uses Late Run To Secure Victory Over Redlands

Holding a 51-49 lead with four minutes to play on Wednesday evening, CMS outscored Redlands 13-0, sealing the 64-49 home victory and setting the table for a big league game against Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
To a casual observer of the game in Ducey Gym, CMS (14-5, 6-2 SCIAC) looked stronger and better than visiting Redlands (6-13, 2-6 SCIAC). For the majority of the game, CMS was unable to convert that strength into points on the scoreboard. In the first half the game appeared to be headed for a blowout. Redlands turned the ball over repeatedly and the Stags scored with ease, taking a 21-8 lead and forcing the Bulldogs coach to call multiple timeouts. In the second half Redlands gamely fought back, as the Stags offense ground to a halt and Redlands grabbed some timely offensive rebounds. With ten minutes to go, the Stags had a one point lead, and with four minutes to go, the Stags led 51-49. Redlands then collapsed, committing four turnovers and missing three three-pointers in seven possessions down the stretch. Conner Faught (JR, Agoura Hills) had two steals, which led to easy Stag baskets at the other end. When the buzzer sounded the damage was done, and CMS was a 15-point winner.
Jason Toney (JR, Yorba Linda [pictured]) led all scorers with 19 points, six assists and three steals, including eight of the Stags final 13 points. Austin Soldner (SR, Southlake, TX) added nine points and five rebounds. Chris Blees (SO, Carmichael) added 10 rebounds and eight points. The Stags have a crucial league matchup this Saturday night in Thousand Oaks against Cal Lutheran University (13-6, 5-3 SCIAC). In their matchup in January, the Stags defeated the Kingsmen 59-55.
