CMS Tops Redlands In Overtime
CMS remained undefeated in SCIAC play (4-0) after beating the University of Redlands 2-1 on Saturday with a sudden-victory goal in the second overtime. The first half was a highly contested match, but after the first 45 minutes the game was still tied at 0-0. In the second half, Redlands was able to capitalize on a CMS defensive breakdown in the 55th minute of play, putting the Athenas behind a goal. However, the CMS rallied back, in the 67th minute, when senior forward Giselle Galanto (Duarte) took a ground shot from outside the box, strategically placing the ball into the back of Redlands' left-side net. The Athenas and Bulldogs continued to battle for the rest of the half, with neither team able to finish another goal before the 90 minutes were up. This put the two teams into overtime play. There were to be two 10 minute overtime halves with the first team to score claiming victory. The first ten minutes passed with no goal. However, in the second minute of double overtime, a through ball was placed at the foot of freshman outside-midfielder Olivia Sylvester (Seattle, WA). After a few touches up the field, Sylvester sent a lofted cross into the box which was rocketed into the back of the net by sophomore forward Rachel Bunting (Eugene, OR [pictured]) for the game winner. CMS improved to 6-1 overall with the win.
CMS next game is at Whittier on Wednesday, September 30 at 7:00 pm. The Athenas return home on Saturday, October 3 for an 11:00 game with Occidental.
