The Athenas hosted the Poets of Whittier College on Wednesday night in a high scoring, thrilling match. Three goals were scored in the first five minutes of the game. Whittier opened the scoring with a goal off a corner in the third minute. CMS responded in the next minute as Shauny Ullman (pictured) finished a cross from Lauren 'Scooby' Phillips. Whittier scored again in the same minute on a great one vs. one effort that sent a ball high over Athena keeper Hannah Dunham. CMS scored three unanswered goals to take control of the match, one more by Ullman, one by Phillips, and one by Lizzie Van Buskirk. Just prior to half, Whittier scored again off a set piece to make the half time score 4-3.
CMS controlled the game much better in the second half getting many chances behind Whittier's high back line. By the end, CMS scored three more goals. Those goals were scored by Rachel Bunting, Annie Belanger and Rosa Ahn. This was Ahn's first goal in the run of play in her career. The goal was set up by fellow senior Julia Nishioka on a great run down the line and a brilliant driven cross. CMS improved to 6-5-3 overall and 6-3-1 in SCIAC with the 7-3 victory.
CMS is on the road this Saturday at 7:00 pm playing La Verne at Damien HS.
