The CMS Women's Soccer team improved to 5-1 in conference play after defeating Whittier Saturday 2-1 for their second straight win. The Athenas showed good control of the game at times, but Whittier would threaten on quick counter attacks. The first half was back and forth with both teams working hard. CMS scored in the 24th minute when Madi Shove (pictured) received a through ball from the CMS defensive half by Shauny Ullman. Shove fought off one defender and was able to finish her 1 v 1 with the keeper. CMS continued to press, but could not score again in the half. CMS registered nine first half shots to Whittier's four.
The second half was dominated early by CMS and they were quickly rewarded with a goal by Isabel Lester and as assist from Shove. Shove crossed the ball into Lester who showed great composure finishing her shot from about 10 yards out in the 49th minute. For the rest of the half, CMS created several dangerous chances but did not convert, even missing a penalty kick late in the half. Whittier never backed down and in the 86th minute finished a rebound from 2 yards out. The game would end with CMS winning 2-1.
The Athenas and Poets had a celebrity visitor at their game as former US Women's National Team forward, Mia Garciaparra Hamm, came to watch. Hamm was a teammate of both coaches of today's game. We thank Mia for coming out and for taking the time for some post game photos (see below).
The Athenas are back home on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm to take on #1 Cal Lutheran who has not lost a conference match in over two years.
