CMS traveled across the street on Saturday morning to take on their rivals, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. The Sagehens started off the game with lots of energy and were rewarded quickly for their efforts in the 11th minute with a great individual effort by Allie Tao who dribbled through the CMS defense and struck a nice shot from about 20 yards out that beat CMS keeper Molly Freed to the left corner. CMS rebounded with a continued effort but struggled with the pressure the Sagehens were putting on them. The game was very back and forth for the remainder of the first half with neither team creating too many chances.
In the second half, Pomona-Pitzer dropped into a more defensive lineup which allowed CMS more time on the ball, but it was tough to break down the P-P defense. The Athenas kept pressing and fighting and finally broke through in the 84th minute to tie the game 1-1. A nice passing series started at midfield that led to Madi Shove receiving a pass on the right hand side. She dribbled behind the Sagehen defense and passed a great ball across the 6 yard box that rolled all the way past the goal. On the back side, Olivia Sylvester was charging and was able to finish her shot. CMS had another couple of chances in the final minutes, but the game was tied at the end of regulation.
The Sagehens stormed out in the first OT period and put the CMS team on their heels and that pressure quickly resulted in a goal in the 96th minute, again by #10 Tao. She finished a rebound from an initial shot from the right hand side of the box that keeper Hannah Dunham was able to save, but not able to push the rebound far enough outside and the on rushing Tao buried her shot from one yard out. The loss moves CMS to third place in the standings, just a 1/2 game ahead of the Sagehens.
CMS will be back on the road this Wednesday to play Occidental at 4:00 pm in a must win for the Athenas.
