Women's Soccer Rebounds With Win Over Oxy
After a tough week of two straight losses, CMS women's soccer was on the road Wednesday to take on Occidental College. Oxy was coming off a big win over second place Redlands, so the Athenas knew they had to be ready to play and give a stronger showing than they had the past few games. Right from the start, CMS played hard and fought for each and every ball. Oxy did not back down from the pressure and the game was back and forth for the opening 30 minutes. CMS was able to score first on a well driven corner from Shauny Ullman (pictured) that found the head of Madi Shove in the 29th minute. Oxy continued to threaten, but the CMS defense held strong and in the 35th minute, the Athenas scored again off of a corner kick. Ullman served another perfectly placed ball that found the head of Jen Najjar who flicked the ball to Kerry Moller who headed the ball over the on-rushing Oxy keeper. The Athenas were happy to be up 2-0 at half, but knew that the lead was not enough.
CMS came out in the second half even stronger than the first and created several scoring opportunities. In the 53rd minute, a nice series of passes led to Megan Patterson finding Ullman on the right side of the box. Ullman beat a couple of defenders on the dribble and crossed a diagonal ball on the ground to Annie Belanger who finished one time from about eight yards out to put CMS on top 3-0. Oxy kept up their pressure and took away the Athenas' chance at a shutout on a nice driven ball from the midfield in the 76th minute. Then, in the 86th minute, Oxy scored again on a defensive breakdown through the middle that left an Oxy forward in behind to go 1 v 1 with CMS keeper Hannah Dunham. With the score now 3-2, the Athenas dug deep to regain control of the game and after threatening with a couple of chances, scored a fourth goal in the 87th minute off another Ullman corner that once again found the head of Shove. This game was a much needed 4-2 win for the CMS team.
The Athenas are back at home this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is senior day and we look forward to celebrating our four outstanding seniors - Belanger, Najjar, Shove, and Olivia Sylvester. Be at the field just prior to the 11:00am kick off to show your support.
