First half lead does not hold as Chapman comes back
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team lost to Chapman 2-1 in today's SCIAC contest. The Athenas scored early in the game but gave up two goals in the second half.
CMS came out strong and were controlling the ball, making good passes and runs. Senior Lauren Phillips took a corner kick for the Athenas that was cleared out by a Chapman defender and shot right back by senior Lauren Allen. The goal keeper deflected the shot and a defender tried to save it but the ball crossed the line giving the Athenas the 1-0 lead.
The Athenas held onto their lead until senior Aisha Elmasri scored on a Panther corner kick assisted by freshman Katie Bell to tie up the game at 1-1.
Chapman broke the tie when freshman Rosie Kerstetter scored late in the second half. There was not quite enough time for CMS to rally and the game ended with the Panthers ahead 2-1.
Coming into today's match Chapman and CMS were third and fourth in SCIAC standings. The Athenas remain in fourth place with a record of 3-3-2 in conference just behind Chapman who betters their record to 5-3.
CMS hosts La Verne this coming Wednesday evening at 7 pm to take on the Leopards (3-3-1 SCIAC).
