BOSTON, Mass. – Goals were hard to come by in each of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team's two matches over the weekend in Boston, as CMS went 1-1 on its East Coast road trip to face Emmanuel and MIT. The Athenas defeated Emmanuel 1-0 on Sept. 5 in the first match of the trip, and then lost 1-0 at MIT to close out the weekend. CMS is now 3-1 on the season.
CMS 1, Emmanuel 0 (Sept. 5)
The Athenas outshot Emmanuel 11-7 in the match and put five shots on goal, but both teams were unable to find the back of the net until CMS scored the lone goal of the match in the 70th minute. Junior defender Allison Lim scored the game-winner for the Athenas at the 69:12 mark. Sophomore Laynee Laube sent the ball in off a corner kick from the right corner, which junior midfielder Darrah Shields headed toward the net. Emmanuel's goalie stopped Shields' header attempt, but Lim was waiting and knocked in the game-winner off of the rebound.
Sophomore goalie Kelly McConnell and freshman goalie Morgan McCoy combined to shut out Emmanuel's offense, coming up with three saves and two saves, respectively.
MIT 1, CMS 0 (Sept. 7)
Originally scheduled to be played on Sept. 6, CMS and No. 25 MIT faced off the next morning after their match was postponed the day before because of inclement weather.
Once again, CMS outshot its opponent, but against MIT, the Athenas were unable to capitalize. The Athenas concluded the match with 10 shots including seven attempts in the second half. Laube and Shields combined for the game's final three shots, but MIT goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann turned away each attempt. Laube, Shields and sophomore Katelyn Faust each had two shots on goal to lead CMS.
