Athenas Beat Colorado College 6-3 and Lose Their First Match to University of Texas at Tyler
The Athenas kicked-off their spring break together on Thursday in a match against the Colorado College Tigers, winning 6-3. Though Katie Lorish and Jaclyn Smrecek had a tough defeat in #1 doubles, the #2 and #3 teams pulled through with 2 wins, each with a pro-set score of 8-5. In singles, Jaclyn Smrecek (pictured at the right) quickly defeated the Tigers' #1 player Britt Swenson 6-0, 6-1. #6 Riley Thomlison also finished quickly, winning 6-1, 6-1. #2 Katie Lorish and #3 Alle Hsu had unfortunate losses, but #4 Emilee Feldhausen and #5 Hannah Gordon brought the Athenas to victory in the last two matches of the day.
The following afternoon at 1:00pm, the Athenas were set to play the #30 University of Texas at Tyler Patriots. It turned out to be a not-so-great day for the Athenas as they lost match after match against the Patriots. In doubles, all three teams lost as they struggled to find consistency in play against the Patriots. Singles matches went quickly for the most part with more unfortunate losses. #4 Alle Hsu and #6 Riley Thomlison fought hard in their 2nd sets. #6 Riley Thomlison played fiercely until she couldn't hold on to the last game; the final score was 6-3, 6-3. Alle Hsu was down 1-5 in the first set, but came back winning 4 games in-a-row to tie the first set at 5-5. Sadly, she lost the following 2 games to end the set with a 7-5 loss. In the second set, she held a 2-games lead at 5-3, but failed to hold her lead and lost the second set 7-5.
Though the Athenas lost 9-0, they are ready to move past this loss, learn from their mistakes, and prepare to play their absolute best the rest of the season. They are now 3-0 in conference, 5-1 overall.
Come support them on Sunday, March 14th as they play against #1 Amherst college at 11:00am.
