After losing in the first round of the ITA Division III Indoor National Championships, the Athenas of CMS delivered a strong resurgence on the second day of competition.
Day 2 Recap:
In the morning session, CMS demonstrated a better adjustment to the indoor environment in a 7-2 win over Denison.
Later in the day, CMS took on Chicago in one of the most competitive matches of the tournament. Lasting nearly 5 hours, the match began at 8:35PM and did not conclude until 1:30AM. At number one doubles, the team of Kristin Lim and Jessie Huang held a 7-4 advantage, before losing 9-8 in a heartbreaking tiebreaker. At number three, the team of Chloe Dobbert and Jaclyn Smrecek kept CMS in contention with an 8-4 victory.
Chicago built a 4-1 advantage in the overall match score, before CMS rallied behind singles wins by Kristin Lim, Crystal Lim, and Jaclyn Smrecek. But Chicago was able to capture the decisive point in a hard fought win at number five singles.
After the match, Athenas coach Max Retzlaff said, " I am really proud of the team for how hard they battled on every point, we just came up a little short on closing out some of our matches."
In the finals, Washington Lee defeated Carnegie Mellon 5-4 to claim the national championship.
The Athenas will be back on the courts Friday, March 12, hosting College of St. Benedict and Cal Tech in a double-header a the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
