The No. 9 Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps rebounded from last weekend’s loss to Middlebury with two wins over ranked opponents. They defeated No. 27 Santa Cruz Friday and No. 30 Linfield on Saturday, both by scores of 9-0.
The Athenas got off to fast start against the Banana Slugs from UC Santa Cruz with a sweep in doubles competition. At two and three, the respective teams of Crystal Lim and Sarah Kukino (8-1), and Chloe Dobbert and Jaclyn Smrecek (8-0), dropped only one game. At number one, Kristin Lim and Jessie Huang rounded out the sweep by closing out the number one team from UC Santa Cruz, 8-6.
CMS was equally dominant in singles competition. At three through six, Huang (6-1,6-1), Kukino (6-0,6-0), Dobbert (6-0,6-1), and Smrecek (6-0, 6-0), combined to drop only four games to the Banana Slugs.
At number one, Kristin Lim returned to her winning ways with 6-2, 6-3 win over UC Santa Cruz’s number one player, Alexandra Scotten.
At number two, Crystal Lim secured the perfect team score with a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
In singles, Chloe Dobbert capped off a great weekend of play with a 6-0, 6-3 decision at number five. Sarah Kukino continues excel at the number four position. The freshman from Lihue, HI defeated her opponent in straight sets (6-0,6-1).
Like CMS, both UC Santa Cruz and Linfield are designated as Western Region teams for NCAA purposes. In five intraregional matches this season, the Athenas have not lost a single game.
The Athenas are done hosting out-of-state teams and will now turn to SCIAC Conference competition. On Friday, April 6 CMS will be hosted by La Verne at the Claremont Club. The following day, Saturday, CMS will host Occidental at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
