Santa Cruz 5, Texas-Dallas 0
CLAREMONT, Calif - UC Santa Cruz jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play and went on to a 5-0 win over Texas-Dallas on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Santa Cruz advances to face top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. PST on courts 1-6, while Texas-Dallas is eliminated from Championships play.

Alexanda Scotten and Laura Wade got Santa Cruz off to a 1-0 lead with a 8-0 win over Rachel Houston and Casey Johnson. The No. 3 doubles team of Caitlin Mannix and Courtney Lymburner followed with an 8-3 win over Jean-Jean Gwo and Alisha Lorren. Ariana Mokhtari and Mary Collins closed out doubles play with an 8-4 win over Auvi Tran and Megan Tan.

Santa Cruz then won its No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches to get the win. Mokhtari defeated Johnson 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1 singles while Wade topped Tran 6-2, 6-4.

Redlands 5, Whitman 0
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The 2013 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships started Friday afternoon, May 10, on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The first round matched the No.3 seed University of Redlands Bulldogs against the No.4 seed Whitman College Missionaries. Redland defeated Whitman, 5-0.

The University of Redlands’ doubles team of Jessica Ly and Ceara Sumida defeated the Missionaries Courtney Lawless and Alyssa Roberg in extra play, (8-8, 7-3). Natalie Etchegaray and Julia Pollak of Redlands defeated Madison Webster and Morgan Lawless 8-2. The Bulldogs completed the sweep of Whitman in doubles, when Maddie Morton and Gabriela Vasquez defeated Kate Rubinstein and Katrina Allick 9-7.

In singles action, the Bulldogs needed two wins out of the six matches to advance. Redlands got one of those wins from Morton, who defeated Rubinstein (6-0, 6-0). The Missionaries’ M. Lawless fought hard, but fell to Redlands’ Sumida (6-2, 6-1). Redlands defeats Whitman, 5-0.

Redlands will face No.2 seed Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday May 11, at 2:00 PM PST.
