CLAREMONT, Calif. – Down 4-3 in its final regular season match with an unbeaten record on the line, the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team came back behind the play of its No. 5 and No. 6 singles to defeat No. 16 Washington & Lee University on Friday night at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Friday night was the third match this season that the Athenas won 5-4 as all other matches, the team has won by a 6-3 margin or more. Earlier in the afternoon with a 9-0 win over La Verne, CMS wrapped up the conference's regular season title and No. 1 seed for the SCIAC Championships which begin May 3.
Against Washington & Lee, CMS led 2-1 after doubles play as both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams earned victories. Senior Kristin Lim and freshman Caroline Ward defeated Sonja Meighan and Patricia Kirkland 8-5. Junior Chloe Dobbert and freshman Yvonne Likomanova earned an 8-3 win the third position over Claire Cahill and Chelsea Mixson
In singles, Lim completed an undefeated singles season on Senior Night as she got the Athenas off to a good start with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Meighan. Washington & Lee then won the No. 2-4 singles matches to lead by one at 4-3. In No. 6 singles, Likomanova evened up the match at 4-4 with a comeback 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 win over Mixson. Dobbert then closed out the Athenas' unbeaten regular season with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Cahill.
Next up for the Athenas is the Ojai Tournament April 25-28 followed by the SCIAC Championships May 3-4.
