Long layoff doesn’t stop Athenas from getting first SCIAC win
CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a couple of weeks in between matches, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team had a pair of matches on Saturday, Feb. 15, losing 5-4 at Cal State Los Angeles before defeating Caltech 8-1 at home to open conference play.
Cal State L.A. 5, CMS 4
Facing off against No. 20 Cal State L.A., CMS took No. 4 and No. 6 singles and the top two doubles matches and nearly came away with the win.
In No. 1 doubles, freshman Katie Kuosman and sophomore Caroline Ward teamed up for a 9-8 win over Leora Hemmerich and Sydney Postal. CMS also took No. 2 doubles as senior Crystal Lim and junior Sarah Kukino got the 8-4 win.
Singles play proved to be the deciding factor of the match as Cal State L.A. took four of the six singles matches including the top three positions. In No. 4 singles, Lim defeated Tiffany Leung 6-3, 6-4. Senior Victoria Santoro won the other singles match for CMS, 6-4, 6-1 over Samantha Sismundo in No. 6 singles.
CMS 8, Caltech 1
In the team's first home match and first SCIAC match of the season, the Athenas eased their way to an 8-1 win on Saturday afternoon. Caltech's lone point of the match came in No. 6 singles.
Ward (6-2, 6-7, 10-8) in No. 1 singles, Kuosman (6-2, 6-1) in No. 2 singles, Kukino (7-6, 6-4) in No. 3 singles, senior Erin Coughlan (6-4, 6-1) in No. 4 singles and senior Victoria Nichols (6-2, 6-1) in No. 5 singles all earned wins.
In doubles, CMS took all three matches, the closest match coming in No. 2 doubles as Lim and sophomore Yvonne Likomanova defeated Jenny Sheng and Michelle Lee 8-3. Ward and Kuosman got the No. 1 doubles win while seniors Brittan Sutphin and Sheena Patel earned a 8-2 win in No. 3 doubles.
Next up for the Athenas is a match at La Verne on Feb. 28.
