CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the second-straight year, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis doubles team of junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) and senior Caroline Ward (CMC) won the doubles title at the USTA/ITA Division III West Regional Championships. The Regionals were held on Oct. 2-4 at Claremont McKenna College's Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
As a result of winning the regional, the two have earned an automatic berth to the 2015 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, October 15-18, in Sumter, S.C. The Small College Championships are familiar territory for Ward and Kuosman, having won the national title in 2014.
In the regional championship match, top-seeded Kuosman and Ward defeated seventh-seeded Emily Chen and Maryann Zhao of Pomona-Pitzer, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. To reach the championship match, Ward and Kuosman won four matches along the way including a tough 8-6 win in the semifinals against fourth-seeded Catherine Allen and Natalie Etchegaray.
CMS sophomores Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Kyla Scott (HMC), the No. 6 seeded doubles team in the tournament, won two matches over the weekend and advanced to the quarterfinals before getting knocked out by the tournament's No. 3 seed, a team from Pomona-Pitzer.
In addition to Brown and Scott, CMS sophomore Bria Smith (CMC) and freshman CC Schwab (CMC) were the other CMS doubles team to win a match, sweeping Madison Madewell and Margaux San Nicholas of La Verne 8-0 in the Round of 32.
In singles, Kuosman, the No. 3 seed advanced all the way to the finals before losing 6-2, 6-4 to No. 4 seed Joy Kim of Pomona-Pitzer.
