CLAREMONT, Calif. – Under the midday sun on Saturday, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team defeated No. 3 Bowdoin in a rematch with the team that ended their season last year. The Athenas emerged the victors in the regular season dual match, 6-3. The Polar Bears returned three of the same players to the court that faced the Athenas in the NCAA tournament in 2016.
Freshman Nicole Tan (CMC) and junior Lindsay Brown (CMC) gave the CMS its first point of the day with a win at No. 1 doubles. They beat Joulia Likhanskaia and her new partner this year, Samantha Stadler, 8-5. Bowdoin punched back with a win at No. 2 doubles as Pilar Giffenig and Tess Trinka defeated senior Katie Kuosman (CMC) and junior Kyla Scott (HMC) 8-6. The 2-1 advantage going into the singles was decided by a tiebreak on court No. 3. Freshmen Catherine Allen (SC) and Madison Shea (CMC) won it 7-3 to take the set 9-8.
Brown earned another point for CMS with her straight-set win at No. 6 (6-2, 6-1). Likhanskaia, ranked No. 49, got the best of Scott today at No. 1 for the Polar Bears' second point. Then, Allen and Tan closed it out for CMS with straight-set victories at No. 3 and No. 2.
At No. 4 singles, sophomore Jessie Cruz (CMC) crawled back into the second set to win it 6-4 after being down 3-0. She then bounced back for the third set win, 6-2. Kuosman took the first set in her singles match and then dropped the second after a 9-7 tiebreaker. Sasa Jovanovic won the final match tiebreaker 10-3 to give Bowdoin its third point of the day.
The Athenas improve to 10-0 this season. They get right back on the court tomorrow and Monday with matches against Sewanee (6-3) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (11-1) respectively. On Sunday, the Athenas take the court against the Sewanee Tigers at 11 a.m.
