CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Championships with a 5-0 win over East Texas Baptist University. The Athenas went up 3-0 in the doubles and never looked back, ending ETBU's postseason run.
CMS earned a First Round bye and played their opening match in the National Championships against ETBU. Yesterday, the unranked Tigers upset No. 23 Whitman with the 5-3 decision in the program's first ever NCAA match.
With the win for CMS today, they will face Pomona-Pitzer for the third time this season in the Regional Final. The match will be held on the upper courts tomorrow, May 14 at 3 p.m.
Kyla Scott (HMC) and Madison Shea (CMC) earned CMS its first team point. CMS quickly went up two breaks and then held serve for the 6-1 lead. The Tigers were able to earn two games in a row but still trailed 6-3. Scott and Shea regained momentum with a break to go up 7-3 and then won the final game in straight points for the match win at 8-3.
The dynamite team of Katie Kuosman (CMC) and Catherine Allen (CMC) worked their way to an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. The pair had success both at the net and from the baseline, constantly keeping Tiffany Stankiewicz and Elisa Kendall off balance.
The final doubles point went to the Athenas as well, but the match saw more breaks of serve than holds. Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan (CMC) ultimately won the match off Tan's serve for the 8-5 victory.
Kuosman continued on her roll and won the first singles match in record time, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Brown finished just minutes later beating Kaleigh Smith 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the win for the Athenas.
