Athenas Volleyball Bounces Back to Beat Tigers

The CMS volleyball team rallied from a tough loss on Friday night to capture a victory over Occidental College at Rush Gymnasium in Eagle Rock Saturday night. The Athenas struck hard in game 1, notching 16 kills and holding the Oxy Tigers to .069 hitting percentage to win 30-21. Occidental fought back in games 2 and 3, behind the play of Sonia Huizar and Kathryn Bockmon to rattle the CMS squad and capitalize on tough serving to win each 30-27. The Athenas re-focused in the set break and hit .406 in the fourth game, led by middle blocker Helena Bottemiller (Jr. CMC, Burien WA), who tallied 6 of her eventual 15 kills in the effort. CMS allowed just 18 points in the game and carried the momentum into game 5 where Occidental faltered, notching 6 hitting errors and several missed serves. CMS was ahead 8-6 at the switch and finished the match at 15-9. Camille Butts (Sr. SCR, Ontario CA) led both teams in kills with 18, while freshman Jenna Suttmeier (SCR, Issaquah WA) paced the defense with 16 digs. With the win, CMS retains 3rd place in the conference and prepares to face #9 nationally ranked University of La Verne Tuesday night at Ducey Gym. Match time is 7:30
