CMS Volleyball fell to #9 nationally ranked University of La Verne Tuesday night at Ducey Gym. Undefeated in conference play, the Leopards came out dominant in game one, running out to a 17-6 lead before the Athenas relaxed and fell into rhythm, slowly pushing back and eventually pulling within 1 at 28-29. A kill by La Verne's Crista Jones who finished the night with 10, ended the CMS campaign, 28-30. Game 2 was much closer from the start, with CMS keeping within 2-3 points of La Verne for two-thirds of the game, but at 20-24, the Athenas gave up a 1-4 run, slipping to 21-28 before succumbing to a 2 game set back, 22-30. The two teams again started fairly even in the opening points of game 3, but up down 16-17, La Verne regained the lead and at 22-21, the Leopards went on an 8-3 run to close out the match, 30-24. The Athenas were led by senior middle blocker, Camille Butts (SCR, Ontario CA) who had 9 kills. Greer Donley recorded the most digs for both teams with 18. The loss droped CMS to 3-3 in SCIAC play.
The Athenas rebounded Friday night against Caltech in 3 games again at Ducey Gymnasium. The Athenas were ahead from the beginning points of each set and held the Beavers to -.203 hitting percentage on the night.
