Estrella-Lemus Leads Athenas to Win Over Oxy

The CMS Volleyball team dropped its opening set, but managed to come back and capture a SCIAC victory over Occidental College Tuesday night in Ducey Gym. The Athenas started the evening slow, giving up a combined 11 hitting and serving errors in the opening set, succumbing to the Tigers, 21-25. The team settled down in set 2 behind the play of Angela Estrella-Lemus (So., CMC, Gilroy CA) who hit .483 for the night with 17 kills on the right side and CMS won the set, 25-16. The Athenas then dominated in sets 3 and 4, 25-7 and 25-16. Middle blockers Helena Bottemiller (Sr., CMC, Burien WA) and Jamie Matusiak (Sr., CMC, Tucson AZ) combined for 24 kills, hitting .552 in the 4 set effort. The win keeps CMS in 3rd place in the conference with a 5-1 record. They will face nationally ranked (#3) University of La Verne at the Leopard Invitational where they will also play #2, Emory University and #1 Juniata College this Friday (4 pm) and Saturday (11 am, 4 pm) in La Verne.
