CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team beat La Verne 3-1 in tonight's SCIAC match up (25-18, 25-14,14-25, 25-16). The Athenas improve their win streak to nine games after a successful weekend.
CMS seemed like they could not be stopped as they took the first two sets 25-18 and 25-14. The offense rallied around outstanding digs by Megan Coleman, setting by Hilary Bruegl and kills by Audrey Breitwieser.
The Athenas came into the third set a little sleepy and fell behind early. Fueled by their initial success, the Leopards brought increasingly more energy into the gym and took the set 25-14 and forced a fourth.
CMS picked up the pace in the fourth set and won it 25-16. The Athenas recommitted between sets and kindled their confidence. Nicole Kerkhof led the way with lights out kills and added a few digs of her own.
Kerkhof led the team with 21 kills and Coleman recorded 14 digs on the day.
CMS improves their SCIAC record to 8-3 to be tied for second place with Occidental, just behind the undefeated in conference, Cal Lutheran Regals. The Athenas travel to Whittier to play the Poets on Tuesday (10/22).
