CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team beat the College of St. Scholastica (3-2) and UC Santa Cruz (3-0) in their first matches of the season during the Pacific Coast Classic.
CMS 3, College of St. Scholastica 2 (25-20, 15-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-6)
CMS faced CSS after the Saints handily beat Chapman 3-0 in the previous game. In the match, the Athenas alternated between aggressive attacks and unforced errors. CMS rallied back from a fourth set loss to go on a 14-3 run to earn the fifth set and the match.
CMS 3, UC Santa Cruz (25-23, 27-25, 25-20)
In the first three points, 34 touches had already been recorded, indicative of how tight the match would be.
UCSC took the 16-13 lead after winning three points in a row off Kaitlyne Fisher's serve. At the end of the game, Tanner Hoke (CMC '16) led her team and served for four straight points to earn the game win.
The second set was back and forth until the very end. During the set, Shelbi Stein (CMC '18) had a team-high six kills. The Athenas carried their momentum into the third set and came out with the 25-20 win.
CMS hosts UT Tyler and Kean tomorrow, August 30 at 9 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. respectively. The other two matches hosted in the Linde Activities Center are Cal Lutheran vs. UT Tyler at 11 a.m. and Kean vs. Cal Lutheran at 3:30 p.m.
