No. 1 WashU ends Athenas’ NCAA run
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team’s season came to an end as they faced No. 1 ranked Washington University-St. Louis in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The No. 7 Athenas rallied back against 10 set points in the first set, but ultimately lost 3-0 to the WashU Bears (29-27, 26-24, 25-14).

Decisive win over Southwestern advances CMS to semifinals in NCAA Regional
In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team eliminated Southwestern University (Tex.) in three sets: 25-14, 25-16, 25-17. The Athenas boasted a .467 hitting percentage in the rematch against the Pirates.

Kerkhof, Werner and Vlasich earn All-West Region awards
On the eve of the start of the NCAA Tournament, junior outside hitter Nicole Kerkhof (CMC), sophomore libero Mikena Werner (SCR) and head coach Kurt Vlasich earned all-region honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Kerkhof was named to the first team while Werner was an honorable mention. Vlasich was tabbed as the West Region Coach of the year for the second time in his career, the first being in the 2013 season.

Volleyball headed to Thousand Oaks Regional to face Southwestern in First Round
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team (26-5) faces a familiar foe, Southwestern (31-4), in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 13 at 12:30 p.m. in the Thousand Oaks Regional hosted by Cal Lutheran. The field of 64 teams was announced on Nov. 9 by the NCAA on the Selection Show.

SCIAC Tournament Champs: No. 9 CMS tops No. 8 Cal Lu for first tournament title
There is a new SCIAC Volleyball Postseason Tournament champion. For the first time in program history, the No. 9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament championship after dethroning eighth-ranked and top-seeded Cal Lutheran 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) on its home court on Nov. 7 at Gilbert Arena. After getting swept by Cal Lu in the tournament finals the previous two seasons, CMS returned the favor in 2015.

2015 Volleyball SCIAC Tournament Preview
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team earned a share of the SCIAC regular season title with Cal Lutheran, both teams with a 14-2 record in conference. This was CMS’ first SCIAC Championship since 1993. In the seventh installation of the postseason tournament, Cal Lutheran takes the top seed due to a tie-breaker rule giving the Athenas the No. 2 seed. La Verne and Whittier round out the field earning the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds in the tournament.

In diametrically opposite matches on Friday afternoon, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team went 1-1 on the day. In the first game, No. 14 Southwestern (Tex.) took on the No. 10 Athenas in a very well-played match where Southwestern came out the victor in five sets (22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-12, 16-14). Later that evening, CMS handled Caltech in three sets (25-12, 25-12, 25-16).

Fall sports teams gearing up for 2014 seasons
As August comes to a close and summer is ending, the great news for CMS sports fans is that fall sports are right around the corner. As women’s and men’s soccer, football, volleyball, men’s water polo, and men’s and women’s cross country report and start training there are over 190 athletes hoping to make a CMS athletic team and build on the stellar year that CMS athletics had last year.

Accolades keep rolling in for Athenas after 25-win season
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its 2013 NCAA Division III All-America teams and junior libero Megan Coleman has been chosen as an honorable mention All-American. In addition, Coleman and freshman outside hitter Nicole Kerkhof were both selected to the All-Tournament team of the Atlanta Regional for their efforts in the team’s two matches during NCAA Division III postseason play.

CMS knocked out of Regionals in closely contested, 3-1 loss to Colorado College
Colorado College ended the No. 23 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team’s season in the second round of the Atlanta Regional on Saturday, Nov. 16 in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships. The Tigers upped their record to 35-4 following the 3-1 verdict over the Athenas who closed out their campaign with a program-best 25-7 record.

Program-best season continues with NCAA opening round win over Thomas More
It had been 16 years since the last Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team made an NCAA postseason appearance and won a match in the tournament. CMS put the 16-year drought behind them with a solid defensive effort to defeat Thomas More in an opening-round match of the NCAA Division III Atlanta Regional on Friday, Nov. 15 at Woodruff P.E. Center on the campus of Emory University.

The CMS Athenas closed out the 2007 season with a 3-game victory over conference opponent Caltech. The Athenas were in charge from the opening serve, challenging the Beavers with aggressive defense and consistent offensive play winning 30-16, 30-21, 30-9.
