In the Athenas' first big test of the season, the team traveled east to play in the Bison Invite at Bucknell University. The Athenas faced five tough games against Division 1 and 2 opponents, coming away with a 2-3 record. Despite the three losses the young Athenas were able to build upon their successes and grow together as a team.
In back to back games the first night the Athenas were pitted against Bucknell University and Mercyhurst College. The Bucknell game was a back and forth match through 2 quarters with the teams being tied at 4-4. The second half saw the host Bison pull away from the Athenas despite two rallies that cut it to a one goal game. The final score was 11-7 with the Athenas on the losing side. Freshman Alex Toohey (Lafayette) lead the team with 3 goals followed by Jenny Ward (SR, Davis) with 2 goals. Senior goalie Abby Woodruff (Davis) had 10 saves in the game for the Athenas.
In the second game of the back to back the Athenas faced a tough Mercyhurst team. The game was tied at half time 5-5, but fatigue began to show in the third quarter as the Athenas saw themselves down two goals after the third. The game would finish with the Athenas losing 11-9. Jenny Ward lead the Athenas with 3 goals followed by Alyssa Filippelli (FR, Rancho Cucamonga) and Jeanne Kelber (SO, Carlsbad) with 2 goals apiece.
On the second day of the tournament the Athenas found their groove notching wins against Siena College and Gannon University. In the first game of the day the Athenas faced a very tough Siena team in a game that turned out to be the best of the weekend. Lead by freshman Candace Filippelli (Rancho Cucamonga) with 6 goals (4 in the 4th quarter) the Athenas were able to hold off a late charge by Siena to capture a 14-12 victory. Alex Toohey, Sarah Quincy (SR, Sacramento) and Alyssa Filippelli chipped in with 2 goals apiece and Abby Woodruff contributed 12 saves in the game for the Athenas.
Building off the momentum from the first game of the day, the Athenas were able to overwhelm Gannon University with great defense and an inspired counter attack. Jenny Ward and Candace Filippelli lead the Athenas with 4 goals apiece and Abby Woodruff (7) and Heather Williams (4) (JR, Ventura) split time in the cage accounting for 11 total saves.
