CLAREMONT, Calif. – Goals were a bit hard to come by for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team, as Pomona-Pitzer prevailed 8-6, in a matchup between the conference's top two teams on April 15 at Axelrood Pool. CMS is now 10-15 overall on the season, 7-1 in SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer is 16-9, 7-0 in SCIAC. Prior to the match, five seniors were honored on Senior Day from CMS; Allison Hu (CMC), LillyBelle Deer (CMC), Haley Conner (CMC), Rose Koper (CMC) and Sarah Gonzalez (CMC).
Over the first eight-plus minutes of the match, Pomona-Pitzer strung together three-straight goals and led 3-0 with 7:22 to play in the second quarter after a goal by Alyssa Woodward. Three different players scored for Pomona-Pitzer during the stretch.
CMS' scoring drought ended when Koper found the back of the net with 5:59 to go in the second quarter for her first of two scores in the match. Pomona-Pitzer then answered with a pair of goals as they stretched their halftime lead out to 5-1.
The first goal of the second half came from CMS' sophomore utility Shannon Golden (CMC) which put CMS within three scores at the 7:03 mark of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Pomona-Pitzer led 7-2, but CMS made things interesting with back-to-back goals from freshman attacker Jessica Gaffney (CMC) and sophomore utility Brittany Arneson (CMC). At that point, CMS trailed by just three at 7-4 with 4:34 to play.
A score by Pomona-Pitzer's Megan Snow which upped their lead to 8-4 with 1:39 on the clock, dashed any hopes that CMS had of a comeback.
Koper and Golden led CMS with two goals apiece. Hope Grant had two scores to lead Pomona-Pitzer while their goalie played well in net with double-digit saves.
Next up for CMS, the SCIAC Championships, which run from April 24-26 across the street at Pomona-Pitzer.
