CMS Dominates Redlands Invitational
The men's and women's cross country teams won their respective races at the Redlands Invitational on Saturday as both teams placed multiple runners in the top 13 finishers. The women scored 23 points and the men scored 31. Both teams are ranked third in the West Region with the women ranked 29th nationally and the men ranked 30th.
The defending SCIAC and West Region Champion Athenas raced first over the unusual race distance of 4.5K (2.80 miles). The team, which lost three of its top four runners from the regional meet due to graduation, had a very impressive showing with nine runners finishing in the top 13 overall. The Athenas also had nine runners between 20th and 35th. Jennifer Tavé (SO, St. Germain, France) was the top Athena finishing second overall with a time of 17:12. Julia Rigby (SO, Santa Ana) finished third with her high school teammate Alison Gushue (SO, Tustin) finishing fifth. Freshmen Aubrey Zimmerling (Lakewood, CO) and Kate Crawford (Seattle, WA) followed closely in sixth and seventh.
The Stags, winners at the 2008 SCIAC Championships and West Region Runner-Ups, also raced over an unusual distance (6K [3.73 miles]). The team lost only two seniors to graduation last year and have added a number of good runners as six freshmen finished in their top 11 finishers. Freshman Brian Sutter (Monroe, WA) was the team's top finisher. He finished third overall with a time of 19:11. Kramer Straube (JR, Menlo Park) finished fourth, Kris Brown (JR, Seattle, WA) was eighth, Rafer Dannenhauer (FR, Shutesbury, MA) was 10th and Brian Kopczynski (JR, Coto de Caza) was 12th. CMS placed six runners in the top 13, nine in the top 21 and 13 in the top 33.

CMS competes next at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, September 19. The women race at 7:30 and the men race at 8:15.
