Stags Dominate SCIAC Duals; Athenas Finish Second
CMS showed why they are one of the top ranked teams in the West
Region and the nation as they dominated the SCIAC Multi-Duals. The
Stags went 7-0 in the competition after finishing
two-three-four-five overall in the race. The Athenas finished 6-1
despite a strong one-three finish. This meet counts towards 50% of
the SCIAC Championship with the remaining 50% coming from the SCIAC
Championships results.
The Athenas raced first and ran strong for the first five
kilometers of the six kilometer race with six runners in the top
12. The team faded some over the last kilometer and Occidental used
a strong finish to pull out a 27-28 win. CMS beat Pomona-Pitzer
25-33 and comfortably won the remaining five dual meets: 20-39 over
Whittier, 18-44 over Cal Lutheran, 15-48 over Redlands and 15-50
over Caltech and La Verne. Jennie Tavé (SO, St. Germain,
France) won the race with a dominating performance. She ran 22:12
and finished 28 seconds in front of the second place finisher, who
was a 2008 All-American. Julia Rigby (SO, Tustin) also ran well
finishing third overall in 22:51. The other scorers for the Athenas
were Ashley Scott (JR, Battle Creek, MI) in 12th, Kate Crawford
(FR, Seattle, WA) in 14th and Alison Gushue (SO, Tustin) in
16th.
The Stags dominated right from the gun and were never threatened in
the race. Kramer Straube (JR, Menlo Park) pushed the winner
throughout the race before finishing second in 26:26. Georgi
Dinolov (JR, Santa Cruz) and Kris Brown (JR, Seattle, WA) ran
together for almost the entire race and finished third and fourth
in 27:00 and 27:08 respectively. Matt Cummins (JR, Riverside)
finished fifth and Florian Scheulen (SR, Encinitas) finished eighth
to round out the scorers. The Stags also had the 11th, 14th and
15th finishers in Brian Kopczynski (JR, Coto de Caza), Matt Kurtis
(SR, Bellingham, WA) and Bryan Chow (SO, Livermore). CMS, the
second ranked team in the West Region and 22nd in the nation, put
eight runners in front of fourth ranked Pomona-Pitzer’s fifth
runner. The Stags beat Occidental 20-43, Pomona-Pitzer 16-42, Cal
Lutheran 16-47, Whittier 15-50 and Caltech, La Verne and Redlands
