Loustalet Named West Region Athlete Of The Year

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday the winners of USTFCCCA Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year honors for the 2012 cross country season in Division III as voted by the division's coaches.

Zorg Loustalet was named the West Region Men's Athlete of the Year.  He won the West Regional title last Saturday by edging his teammate, Bennett Naden, at the line.  His time of 24:38.2 was a personal best by a minute and is second best in CMS history.  Loustalet is just the second freshman in region history to win the region title.

CMS head coach John Goldhammer was named the West Region Coach of the Year for both men and women.  The Stags, ranked 10th nationally, won the region title with 34 points, the best winning score since the region expanded to 20 teams in 1998.  The men also won by the largest margin, 34 points, over the same time span.  The Athenas, ranked fourth, scored 40 points to win the region title by 54.  Both teams, each of whom won SCIAC titles earlier this fall, will be competing at the NCAA Championships for the fifth straight season.
