Willamette keeps CMS out of win column with sweep in doubleheader

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team is still in search of its first win of 2015 as Willamette took the second and third games of a the four-game weekend series, on Feb. 7 at Arce Field. Willamette (3-0) took the first game on Saturday 9-2, and the second game 6-3. With the losses, CMS is now 0-4 in the young season. In both games, CMS stayed close, but Willamette broke away in each game in the late innings.

Game 1: Willamette 9, CMS 2
After eight innings, CMS trailed 4-2 but Willamette broke things away in the top of the ninth innings with five runs. With one out and the bases loaded, Willamette got a bases clearing, three-run double to left field by Gordie Clary. 

CMS' runs in the game came on a solo homer to center field by freshman center fielder Trey Smith (CMC) who went 2-for-4 in the game. The other run for CMS came in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI groundout by Jackson Umberger (CMC).

Junior pitcher Clayton Brock (CMC) started the game for CMS and went six innings, allowing four runs, three earned.

Game 2: Willamette 6, CMS 3
CMS led 2-1 through seven innings behind seven strong innings from starting pitcher MacKenzie Menthen (CMC). Menthen also helped CMS get its first run of the game, an RBI groundout in the second that scored Christian Hoxsie

Willamette evened the score at 1-1 in the fourth and then CMS took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on an error. The 2-1 lead held until the eighth inning when Willamette got to Menthen for two of their four runs in the inning. Menthen allowed a single and walk. Those runs then came around to score against the bullpen on a two-run double by Mason Fessle after a wild pitch.

Willamette tacked on two more runs on its second two-run double of the inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning after a lead-off triple by Smith, Menthen brought him home to narrow the Willamette lead to 6-3 which is as close as CMS would get.
