CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team dropped both games in a Saturday double header versus the University of Redlands. The Stags kept it close in the first game losing 6-4 but lost their steam and dropped the second game 14-1 in seven innings.
Game 1: Redlands 6, CMS 4 - Box Score
With the bases loaded and down by four in the bottom of the ninth, the Stags had a chance to tie the game but after two runs, their rally came just short, losing 6-4. The Stags out-hit their opponent 12-10 but the Bulldogs were more efficient with their offense, and scored on two sacrifice flies, two doubles, and a wild pitch.
MacKenzie Menthen (CMC) led CMS with three hits, including one double, and two RBIs. Sophomore second baseman Nicholas Lillie (CMC) also had a big day at the plate, recording two hits and two runs at his four at bats.
The designated hitter for the Bulldogs, Joey Warner, led all players with three RBIs including two doubles.
Game 2: Redlands 14, CMS 1 (7 inn.) - Box Score
CMS took an early lead when Christian Hoxsie (CMC) singled up the middle, allowing Trey Smith (CMC) to score and were able to stay ahead until the top of the fourth inning when Redlands opened up the game with five big runs. From that point on, Redlands was able to keep their momentum going and provided a stout defensive effort, keeping the Stags off the board and ending the game in the seventh inning with a score of 14-1.
Mark Tumlinson, third baseman for the Bulldogs, provided the biggest play of the day with a long home run to center field which batted in two runs.
The Stags play Whittier College next weekend, at home on Friday, April 17 and a double header away on Saturday, April 18. Down three games to the Poets, the Stags need a series sweep to grab the seventh seed going into the SCIAC Round Robin games.
