CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first of their three game series, the Chapman Panthers rolled over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team 12-4.
Chapman came out strong in the first inning scoring three runs off of freshman pitcher Nick DeGallier (CMC).
The Panthers had another three run inning in the third, scoring three runs on four hits off to take a commanding 6-0 lead early.
CMS employed a bunt-heavy strategy through their first several offensive innings but did not have much success aside from freshman infielder Ryan Motter (CMC) reaching first on a well-placed bunt in the second.
DeGallier and the Stags turned in a solid defensive fourth inning ended by freshman outfielder Deji Andrew (CMC) on a great sliding catch in right center.
In the bottom of the sixth with Trey Smith (CMC) on third and Nolan Anderson (CMC) on second, Motter singled through the middle and advanced to second on an error, scoring Smith and putting the Stags on the board. Andrew then struck out with runners on second and third but the Stags left the sixth down 6-1.
Senior relief pitcher Clayton Brock (CMC) came in at the top of the seventh but did not have much luck against the Panther hitters. Brock allowed a double to Tyler Cook followed by Chapman scoring Cook on an error. Infielder Jared Love then homered, extending the Panthers lead to 9-1.
CMS had another opportunity to put runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh with sophomore infielder Alex Clemens (CMC) in scoring position and senior infielder MacKenzie Menthen (CMC) on first. Smith took advantage of the opportunity when he ripped a double to center field with two outs to score both base runners. Anderson then turned in an RBI of his own on a deep single to right center to make it a 9-4 game. The Stags chased relief pitcher Dominic Bastone when they loaded the bases on back to back walks but pinch hitter Chase Eller (CMC) grounded out off pitcher Mason Collins.
Chapman added two more runs in the top of the ninth and closed out the 12-4 victory.
Winning pitcher Matt Smith turned in a fantastic performance for the Panthers, only allowing one run on five hits through 7.2 innings of work.
Smith, Anderson and Motter each had 2 RBI for the Stags.
CMS (4-15, 2-8 SCIAC) will continue the series at Chapman with a doubleheader on March 19.
