Men's Hoops Pulls Away From Whittier In Second Half

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After playing a tough non-conference schedule, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team have been coming into their own in SCIAC play, now at 2-0 after its 78-68 win over Whittier College on Saturday night at Ducey Gym.

CMS (3-4, 2-0) held a double-digit lead on numerous occasions including a 43-33 advantage at the break. Whittier (3-3, 1-1) got within a point at 51-50 after a three-pointer by junior F Chris Barnes-Williams eight minutes into the second half which is as close as they would get. A layup by freshman C Shelby Lane answered right back and started what ended up being an 11-0 run for the Stags to take a 62-50 lead at the 9:55 mark of the second half.

A pair of three-pointers by F Kevin Sullivan and one by G Cameron Cain highlighted the Stags run. CMS maintained a double-digit lead for much of the rest of the game and led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Sullivan had a game-high 24 points for the Stags while senior G Cody Mivshek also landed in double-figures with 11 points.

For Whittier, three players were in double-figures led by Barnes-Williams who had 18 points. Junior F Tyree Landrum had a double-doube with 13 points and 11 rebounds while junior F Aaron Fernandez added 11.

The Stags next play La Verne in SCIAC play on the road Wednesday, Dec. 5 before returning home on Saturday, Dec. 8 to host Caltech at 7 p.m. in Ducey Gym.
