Stags hold off late surge from Kingsmen, stay unbeaten in SCIAC play

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team won 66-58 against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen on Jan. 15 at Ducey Gym. With Wednesday's conference win, the Stags improved to 5-0 in conference and 10-4 overall.

CMS started strong in the first half with eight different players reaching the score column. The Stags headed into the locker room up 32-24 playing tough defense and shooting just over 45 percent from the field.

Over half way through the second half, the Stags were up by as much as 17 and looked to close the door on the Kingsmen, but they put together a calm 11-0 run to cut the margin to six, but late free throws and timely ball movement from the Stags, were able to pull out the eight point victory, 66-58.

Remy Pinson led all scorers with 18 points to go along with seven strong rebounds and five assists. Nick Lund came off the bench for the Stags and added a nice boost of offense going 6-for-7 from the floor to finish with 12 points. Riley Hall logged 20 tough minutes and adding six points to the box score. Before tonight's game, Cal Lu was averaging for the season almost 50 percent from the field. The Stags defense held the Kingsmen to just 34 percent.

The CMS men's and women's basketball teams will host a conference double header at Ducey Gym, Saturday, Jan. 18 against Caltech. The men are slated to tip at 5:00 p.m. with the women to follow at 7:00 p.m.
