CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a ceremony honoring the legacy of Ted Ducey, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team beat Redlands 74-63 to clinch the conference title in the final regular season game played in Ducey Gym. The fact that Ted Ducey's son, Jim Ducey, is the Redlands' head coach made it a special evening for all. The Stags are now 13-1 in SCIAC and secured the regular season championship despite having two more games on the schedule.

The Bulldogs got off to a swift start and took a six point lead early in the game. CMS fought back to tie up the game at 14 points apiece. Senior Remy Pinson came up with two big three point shots for the Stags and scored 8 points in the first half. At halftime the Stags trailed by one point: 29-28.

The physicality of the game picked up and the second half was rife with fouls from both teams: 14 for Redlands and 11 for CMS.

The Stags snatched back the lead with 16:33 remaining in the game with a three point basket by junior Jack Grodahl to go up 36-34. CMS retained the lead for the remainder of the game for a final score of 74-63.

Senior Tyler Gaffaney played the whole game for the Stags and led the team with 21 points and eight rebounds.

The Stags shot 64% from the field in the second half allowing them to break away and score 46 points in the half. CMS blocked four of Redlands' shots tonight, most significantly a block by sophomore Shelby Lane resulting in a rebound by Pinson and a pass to Gaffaney for a wide open layup.

With the win the Stags clinched their 17th SCIAC Championship and cut down the net. CMS earns the #1 seed for the conference tournament starting on Feb. 29.

For Redlands, Eric Bradford had 17 points and went 9-11 from the foul line.

The Stags finish up the regular season with two road games at Cal Lutheran this Saturday, Feb. 22 at 5 pm and then at Whittier on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 pm.
