Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener

The Stags opened up their season with an exciting 3-2 overtime victory over the Missionaries from Whitman on Saturday. CMS controlled much of the possession the first half and their high pressure defense caused a lot of problems for Whitman. In the 42nd minute Ethan Halberg high pressured the outside defender of Whitman causing him to play a hurried ball back to his own keeper which Harrison Doyle intercepted and put in the back of the net for the Stags' first goal of the season. Early in the 2nd half David Taylorlaid off a ball to a running on Jake Bishop which he buried in the low left corner to give CMS a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute. Leland Mattaeus helped the Missionaries battle back with two goals off his head, the first in the 61st minute and the second in the 72nd minute. Both teams battled hard for the rest of regulation, but the second half came to a close with the score still 2-2, forcing overtime.

The Stags regained their momentum in overtime, outshooting their opponents four to zero. In the 104th minute Bishop drove the end line and attempted to cut the ball back to Doyle. A Whitman defender attempting to break up the dangerous pass went to ground and deflected the ball back into his own net giving the Stags the win.

Head Coach Dan Calichman said "Their were about twenty minutes that we played very sloppily, and paid for that by giving up two goals. Luckily, our goalkeeper Daniel Roberts played very well and made sure it wasn't three. I'm very proud of our boys being able to battle back after giving up those two goals and get the win. It was a great way to start our season."
CMS returns to action on Thursday.  They host Cal Baptist University on Pritzlaff Field at 7:00.
