THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team earned the 1-0 victory over Cal Lutheran in a must-win game on Monday night. The Stags' only goal was scored by freshman Patrick Burke (CMC) for his sixth of the season while the CMS defense also recorded its sixth shutout.
The back line for the Stags not only played the entire game, but also did the heavy lifting for CMS. Junior Jacob Skoll (CMC), freshman Adam Singer (CMC), and seniors Cole Mora (CMC) and William Cresap (CMC) stepped up to the challenge of the game, especially after having lost the leadership of Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC) on the field. Of the 15 shots the Kingsmen took, only three were on frame and efficiently saved by Daniel Cui (CMC) while the rest were off target.
Burke was assisted by senior Mehron Abdi (CMC) in the 23rd minute of the game giving the Stags all they needed for the eventual win. Of the shots taken by Abdi, Burke and Michael Crowley (CMC) on the night, all of them were on goal.
In the last ten minutes, Cal Lutheran was playing with a man-advantage and still the CMS defense shut down every attack as the Kingsmen tried to push the pace of play.
Head coach Matt Edwards commended the Stags' resolve this evening. "Our back four defended lots of balls into the box. The fighting spirit from the team was evident throughout which was very pleasing to see."
With the win, CMS (8-6-1 SCIAC) added three points to their total, bringing them up to 25 and into fourth place. With just one game left to play, the Stags are two points above Pomona-Pitzer (7-5-2 SCIAC) at 23 and trail La Verne (9-4-1 SCIAC) by three. CMS hosts Whittier College (3-10-1 SCIAC) in the final game of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at Pritzlaff Field.
