CMS Dominates La Verne

The CMS Stags and Athenas each moved to 3-0 in SCIAC competition after dominating wins over the University of La Verne on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at CMS' Axelrood Pool.  CMS won 183 to 55 on the men's side and 197 to 34 in the women's meet.

The Stags won 12 of 13 events and were led by triple winner, Devin Bowers.  Bowers paced a deep field in the 200 yard freestyle, touching in 1:49.32.  In the 100 butterfly, Bowers hit a season best time, finishing in 53.82.  To finish the meet, he anchored the victorious 200 yard freestyle relay.

Several Stags notched double victories on the day.  Senior Garrett Smith took the gold on both diving boards.  Sophomore Jordan Lieberman came off of a win in the 400 Individual Medley to also place first in the 100 backstroke.  Senior Ian McGinnity showed his freestyle range by pulling away in the 1650 free and also by sprinting a leg in the winning 200 free relay.  Jeff McNerney did the same, winning the 500 free and performing on the "A" 200 free relay.  Vincent Pai swam legs on the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Other individual winners were Blake Weber (50 free) and Sean Smith (100 free).  Rounding out the victorious relays were Sean Fitzgerald (200 free relay), Nick Ostreim (200 medley relay) and Austin Hallett (200 medley relay).

"It was a good day for us," said Coach Charlie Griffiths. "On top of Training Camp workouts, we faced some tremendous competition last week, racing relays with Division I West Virginia University and then contesting our annual distance meet at California Baptist University.  It was fun to end the week by racing in our home pool and by focusing on SCIAC competition."

The Athenas were also dominant, winning all 13 events.  CMS produced a pair of triple winners at the meet.  Junior Emma Jones won the 100 free in 54.89 and then came back to post an in-season best of 1:08.59 in the 100 breast.  Jones also anchored the "A" 200 medley relay to victory.  Freshman Michele Kee swam the breaststroke leg of that medley relay, a leg on the winning 200 free relay and also set the SCIAC leading time in the 400 IM (4:42.05).

Two additional Athenas won two individual events each.  Sophomore diver Carmen Lundell hit the highest scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.  Junior Whitney Dawson won the "daily double," leading the field in the 1650 and 500 yard freestyle events.  Meanwhile, Senior Jenni Rinker won the 100 backstroke and anchored the winning 200 free relay.  Freshman Erin MacLean placed first in the 100 butterfly and led off that free relay.  Fellow frosh, Helen Liu, helped sprint the 200 medley and 200 free relays to victories.

Other winners were Olivia Graham (200 free), Kristie Howard (50 free) and Elsa Cheng (200 medley relay).

CMS returns to action this Saturday, January 15, 2011 vs Whittier College at CMS.  Diving starts at 10:00 a.m. with swimming at 11:00 a.m.
