Men's Tennis Completes Sweep on Historic Day

Men's Tennis Completes Sweep on Historic Day

Led by senior Victor Chien (Diamond Bar, CA [pictured right]) who notched his 49th career singles victory at the #5 position against Oxy, and then returned at #3 doubles to help the Stags sweep the doubles against Vanguard, CMS Men's Tennis earned 8-1 victories against Occidental and Vanguard on Saturday.

The morning SCIAC contest was notable for the Stags' dominating doubles play, with the three CMS pairs yielding a mere three games in three matches. The singles proved to be more challenging, as only Warren Wood (Fr. - Del Mar, CA) at #1, Alex Johnson (Jr. - Thousand Oaks, CA) at #3, and Chien at #5 were straight set victors. Chien, whose 49-16 career singles record ranks in the top three all-time for winning percentage, clinched the 60th straight conference victory for the Stags. The win moves CMS into a two-way tie for first place in SCIAC with Cal Lutheran.

In the afternoon match against NAIA #7 Vanguard, CMS continued it's consistent doubles play and again secured a sweep to open the match. The Stags' top two teams each came back back from a break down to earn clutch wins. Wood and partner Nik Marino (Fr. - San Diego, CA) trailed 3-5 before winning five of the next six games to give CMS a 1-0 lead. Number two team Neel Kotrappa (So. - La Verne, CA) and Brandon Wei (Sr. - Lake Oswego, OR) battled back from an early break down, and then after leveling the match, needed to break serve again at 8-7 down to stay in the match. After breaking and forcing a tie-break, the duo saved a match point at 5-6 and then closed out the tie-break and the match 8-6. Chien and partner Robbie Erani (Sr. Capt - New York, NY) completed the sweep for CMS by consolidating their one-break advantage for an 8-6 win at #3.

Singles play against Vanguard saw the Stags get first set advantages at all but the #2 position. Wood at #1, Marino at #3, and  Cameron Bernhardt (Fr. - San Diego, CA) at #6, all had easy first sets, while Kotrappa at #4 and Johnson at #5 both came from behind to earn theirs. After Marino put CMS up 4-1, Bernhardt provided the clincher to what would be CMS' fourteenth victory of the season, and the 200th of Settles' career as Stags' head coach. Johnson, Wood and Kotrappa then closed out their matches in straight sets to complete the 8-1 score.

CMS is now 14-6 overall and 3-0 in conference, and will travel to #14 Redlands this Friday for a 2 PM match. On Saturday, the CMS men's and women's teams host Pomona-Pitzer at 6 PM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Both Saturday matches will be accessible via live streaming.
