Wood to face off against Amherst’s Fritz for D-III singles title

CLAREMONT, Calif. – When all said and done, seeding for the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championships held true as top-seeded Warren Wood of  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and No. 2 seed Joey Fritz of Amherst both advanced through the semifinals and into the title match. The two will face off for the national title on Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m. at CMS' Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

This will be the third time Wood and Fritz face each other this season in singles play. Wood won the first match-up on March 21 6-3, 6-4, then Fritz defeated Wood 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 on May 21st in the national title match of the team championships.

Wood started off the day with a quarterfinals 6-3, 6-2 win over Chris Krimbill of Case Western. Then in the semifinals, Wood defeated teammate Joe Dorn 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the championship match. Dorn won his quarterfinal match 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 against Wade Heerboth of Kenyon.

The Stags had three of Friday's four NCAA singles semifinalists, the other being Nikolas Marino who won his quarterfinal match 6-2, 6-2 over Colby's Carl Reid. Marino then lost 6-4, 6-1 to Fritz from Amherst.
