Fourth quarter goals lift CMS over La Verne in SCIAC Water Polo Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. - In the first day of the SCIAC Water Polo Championships, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's team beat La Verne 16-12 to advance to the semi-final game.

In the quarterfinal match, the Stags took an early 5-3 lead after the first quarter with goals by junior Tanner Cullen (two), junior Adam Hilborn (two) and Daniel Cogan.

Cullen went on to score four in the game followed shortly by Hilborn with three.

The Leopards outscored CMS in the second quarter and tied up the game at 7-7 with a last minute goal in a six-on-five. The third quarter saw the game tied on three occasions - at eight, nine and ten points each. The Stags earned the one goal advantage at the end of the quarter with a score by sophomore Ellison Taylor who had two clutch goals in the third quarter alone.

The Stags held La Verne scoreless for over seven minutes of the final period, only allowing a goal with 45 seconds on the clock. The relentless CMS offense went on a 7-2 run to close out the game and earn the win, Cullen scoring the final two.

In closely contested match with both benches receiving yellow cards, the Stags were able to overcome the hype and bear down for the victory. Senior James Kelly had a solid day in the cage, recording nine save, three of which were in the fourth quater.

CMS meets Chapman in the semi final match tomorrow, Nov. 22 at 11:45 a.m., The Stags last faced off against Chapman on Nov. 8 and won 15-10. Whittier and Redlands compete in the other semi-final match.
