CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team will serve as one of 16 host sites for the opening rounds of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship when it welcomes in Linfield and Whittier this Friday-Sunday for a three-team double-elimination regional.
CMS is making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance and will be the second seed in its regional, hosting third-seeded Whittier in the first game of the weekend on Friday at 12 noon. Whittier will then meet top-seeded Linfield in the second game on Friday (3:30 p.m.) with CMS and Linfield facing each other in the first game on Saturday (11 a.m.).
Linfield comes in as the No. 5 ranked team in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association with a 35-6-1 record. A year ago, Linfield hosted a regional and defeated CMS 2-1 in the finals to advance to the Super Regionals. The Athenas were ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation earlier this season, but come in as the No. 2 seed in the regional and are unranked for the first time since early March. Whittier, the No. 3 seed in the regional and the SCIAC Tournament Champion, is the biggest culprit for CMS falling out of the top 25, as the Poets have won four straight head-to-head against CMS, three via walk-off hits (two 5-4 wins on the last day of the regular season and a 9-8 win in a SCIAC elimination game).
The complete tournament schedule and links to live stats and video are below. Ticket prices for single-session tickets (good for all games played that day) are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens/military personnel, $7 for students, $5 for children under 12 years of age (under 2 years are free).
