LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In the first SCIAC multi-dual meet of the season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track & field teams, the Athenas went 2-0 (Occidental: 113-45, Caltech: 142-0) while the Stags went 1-1 (Occidental: 72-91, Caltech: 138-8) on March 5 at Bill Henry Olympic Track. The men's loss to Oxy ended an eight-meet undefeated streak, while the women extended their SCIAC undefeated streak to 16.
This meet was the first official event of the season for CMS and counted towards both the SCIAC Championships and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. There is not an absolute qualifying standard for Nationals - the top-22 times/marks in each event qualify. That said, the mark needed to qualify stays roughly the same each year, so when an athlete surpasses that number, he/she is almost certain to qualify.
Top performers of the meet came from sophomore Michael Wagenveld (CMC) of the Stags and sophomore Tyra Abraham (SCR) for the Athenas. Wagenveld won the pole vault (4.90/16-00.75). His mark ranks him No. 2 all-time at CMS and No. 7 in SCIAC. This mark almost certainly qualifies him for Nationals. Abraham easily came away with wins in the 100 (12.12) and 200 (25.41) meters and her 200 was a PR. She remains No. 7 at CMS but improved her mark, and her 100m mark is a likely National Qualifier.
Other performances that ranked in CMS' top-10 were the women's 4x100 relay and women's discus. The 4x100 team (Brittany Griffin (Fr), Aiyanna Cameron-Lewis (So), Sabrine Griffith (Fr) & Abraham) won with a time of 48.43 and moved up the CMS top-10 list from No. 8 to No. 5. Sophomore Emily Bassett (CMC) had a top mark of 42.20/138-05, a 15-foot PR that now ranks No. 5 at CMS. Junior Lauren Mott (CMC) improved her best mark to 39.76/130-05 but fell to No. 9 at CMS with Bassett's entry into the top-10 list.
On Friday, March 11, CMS heads to the Occidental Distance and Sprint Carnival.
