CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Up by as many as 12 points in the second half, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team failed to hold its lead, as they lost 69-61 to Whittier College on Saturday night at Ducey Gym in its SCIAC home-opener.

With a 33-25 halftime lead, CMS (1-5, 0-2) scored back-to-back buckets to start the second half with scores by junior F Sarah King and junior G Madeline Barnes to jump ahead 37-25 30 seconds into the second half. Whittier then began to chip away over the next several minutes by going on a 17-7 run over a seven minute span and eventually even the score. Barnes had a team-high 14 points on the night while King had 12 points.

Whittier (2-3, 1-1) tied the score at 44-44 on a bucket by junior G Amanda Apgar with 9:13 remaining in the game. After CMS took the lead back on a basket by junior G Shelby Barthold, Whittier jumped ahead for good on a pair of three-pointers by sophomore G Dannika Navales-Lugtu at 52-48 with 4:39 remaining. Navales-Lugtu proved tough for CMS to stop as she scored 30 points including 13-of-14 from the free-throw line. Barthold joined King and Barnes as a double-figure scorer with 10 points.

Behind a strong shooting effort in the first half, the Athenas built a 33-25 halftime lead. CMS shot 54 percent in the half and were led by eight points each from King and Barnes. King was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the half and 6-for-6 on the night. CMS outshot Whittier making 27 field goals to Whittier's 22. The Poets however had a large advantage at the free-throw line and on three-pointers.

Next up on the schedule for CMS is a SCIAC road game vs. La Verne on Thursday, Dec. 6 before returning home on Dec. 7 to host Wheaton (Ill.) in a non-conference game slated for 7:30 p.m. at Ducey Gym.
