PASADENA, Calif. - Senior Kimberly Scamman
(CMC) went 15-20 from the field and scored a career-high 41 points
in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team's 65-61
victory over Johns Hopkins in the first game of the CMS-Caltech
Classic on Dec. 29 at Caltech. With the win, the team's third in a
row, CMS imrpoved to 7-3 on the season.
In the team's first game in over two weeks, CMS overcame a six-point, first half deficit to come back and get the win. CMS trailed 31-25 at the break but outscored Johns Hopkins 40-30 in the second half to pull out the 65-61 victory. Like the team, Scamman saved her best half for the second half. Scamman put up 16 points on 6-8 shooting in the first half and then outdid herself in the second half with 25 points on 9-12 shooting. The 41 points which she scored came in just 31 minutes of playing time. Of her 41 points, she made seven free throws and four three-pointers and also added nine rebounds. The CMS record for points in a game is 44 set by Rebekah Chee vs. Linfield in 2000.
Late in the first half, Johns Hopkins led by 11 points at 29-18 after a pair of free throws by Beatriz Williams with 2:10 left before halftime. After Scamman scored CMS' first eight points of the second half, CMS took its first lead of the second half after two free throws from freshman center Kailee Severt (CMC) to make it 35-34. The teams traded leads for much of the second half and Johns Hopkins led late with under two minutes to play. With 1:48 left, sophomore forward Kris Brackmann (CMC) tied the game with a lay-up for CMSand Scamman followed with a basket with 1:21 remaining to give CMS the lead for good.
CMS is back in action in the CMS-Caltech Classic on Dec. 30 against the Milwaukee School of Engineering at 5 p.m. at Harvey Mudd College's Linde Activities Center.
