Second half surge by the Athenas not enough

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a very close game, the Athenas rallied from behind from a four goal deficit to the Whittier College Poets to end up falling only one goal short of forcing the game into overtime.  The Athenas sophomore Izzy Laterzo scored what seemed to be the game tying goal with under a minute left only to have it called back when the Poets challenge of her stick was successful.

The Poets' freshman Jess Hansen scored the first goal of the game inside the first minute of play. However, the Athenas answered in less than two minutes with a goal by freshman Cara Cancelmo.  The scoring went back and forth from both teams until a goal by sophomore Katharine Connaughton gave the Athenas their last lead of the game at 3-2 with 22:43 left in the first half.  From here the Athenas were outscored by the Poets 5-1 leaving the Athenas down 4-7 to end the half.

Although the Poets scored the first goal of the second half it was still dominated by a high energy attack from the Athenas.  Consecutive goals by junior Christina Sutherland, sophomore Molly O'Donnell, and freshman Alex Miele had the Athenas only down one with 11:27 left to play in the game.  A goal by Poet Shaina Denny and an answer by Athena senior Anthea Weixel again left the Athenas down only one with 5:16 left to go in the game.  With just under a minute left, Laterzo scored a goal only to have the goal taken away by a successful challenge of her stick by the Poets, thus leaving the Athenas one goal short of overtime and the final score 8-9 in favor of the Poets.

The Athenas were led by freshman Cara Cancelmo who had two goals and one assist.  The Poets were led by sophomore Rebekah Delledera and freshman Jess Hansen who both had three goals.

The Athenas take the field next at Chapman on Saturday, April 19 at 7:00 PM.  This will be the last conference game for the Athenas before the SCIAC tournament.
