CLAREMONT, Calif. – In its first match of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team played even in the second half, but the first half ended up costing CMS in an 8-5 loss at Pomona-Pitzer on Feb. 24 at the South Athletics Complex.
Over roughly the first 20 minutes of the first half, Pomona-Pitzer (1-0, 1-0 SCIAC) outscored CMS 4-0. Pomona-Pitzer held a 4-0 lead until freshman midfielder Corie Hack (CMC) scored her first-career goal on a free position shot with 38 seconds left before halftime.
CMS (1-0, 1-0 SCIAC) came out firing in the first three-plus minutes of the second half with four shots on goal, all of which were saved by Pomona-Pitzer goalie Gaby Fukumura (she had nine in the match). Junior midfielder Zoe Pinczower (CMC) then broke through for a CMS goal to make it 4-2 with 26:41 remaining. Pomona-Pitzer then answered with three-straight scores, two of which were by Sarah Markowitz, to make the score 7-2 with 13:06 on the clock.
The final 13 minutes of the match saw CMS outscore Pomona-Pitzer 3-1, but CMS was only able to get within three scores (7-4 and 8-5) the rest of the night. Sophomore Katie Hill (CMC) scored two of CMS' three final goals, the other coming from senior attacker Christina Coffin (CMC).
