CLAREMONT, Calif. – A convincing 11-6 win over Chapman University gave the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team a season sweep over the SCIAC-leading Panthers.
Junior midfielder Zoe Pinczower (CMC) opened the scoring on the Athenas' first possession and put CMS up 3-1 with her second of the first half just over 12 minutes in.
Midway through the first half, sophomore midfielder Ellen Berkley made a nice play in the neutral zone to force a turnover and sophomore forward Mikaela Connell (CMC) scored on the ensuing rush to extend the Athena lead to three.
The teams traded goals before senior attacker Christina Coffin (CMC) scored with 10 seconds left in the half to give CMS a 6-2 advantage at halftime.
CMS caused eight turnovers in the first half and outshot Chapman 10-7.
Freshman midfielder Corie Hack (CMC) netted her second goal of the game 40 seconds into the second half when she ducked underneath a pair of Panther defenders to find a clear scoring lane and add to the Athena lead.
Connell found the back of the net on a free position shot at 21:41 and sophomore midfielder Katie Hill (CMC) capitalized on a feed in close from Hack less than a minute later to go up 10-3.
Coffin added one more with seven minutes left and CMS held on for an 11-6 victory.
The Athenas played a strong possession game which led to them outshooting the Panthers 27-21, with Pinczower, Hack, Connell and Coffin netting two goals each.
Gretchen Rodenberger scored twice for Chapman and Dillan Watts caused three turnovers.
CMS improves its record to 10-3 overall (5-2 SCIAC) and remains in contention for the conference championship and home field advantage during the SCIAC Championships. The Athenas will next travel to Whittier on April 16.
