ORANGE, Calif. – On Wednesday evening, the Chapman Panthers broke a scoreless game in the 96th minute with a golden goal off the foot of Shelby Brown to defeat the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas 1-0. The Panthers and Athenas split their two matches this season by identical 1-0 scores. The Athenas took down Chapman at home on Sept. 23.
The opening half featured opportunities for both the Panthers and Athenas. CMS attempted three shots in the half, but opportunities in the ninth, 18th, and 29th minute were turned away by Chapman keeper Maeve O'Connor. The Panthers took six shots in the first 45 minutes, forcing Claire Hamson to make five saves.
CMS replicated their first-half shot total in the second period with three attempts, putting two on frame. Sarah Tocher (CMC) and Gabrielle Clouse (CMC) put shots on target in the 54th and 70th minute, respectively, but they were both denied. In the half, Chapman attempted seven shots and put three on target, but Hamson kept it a scoreless match by adding three more saves to her total.
After 90 minutes of regulation, the game moved into overtime. CMS had the first dangerous chance of the extra period, but a shot from Rhiann Holman in the 93rd minute went wide. The Athenas earned a pair of corners in the 94th minute, but were unable to attempt a shot off the corners.
Hamson collected her ninth save of the match in the 95th minute, but a minute later the Panthers would connect for the game-winner. Elle Uyeda found Shelby Brown at the corner of the box and Brown lofted a shot to the back post. The ball went over the outstretched arm of Hamson and found the back of the net for the golden goal, ending the match.
The Athenas will continue their four-game road trip with a match at Occidental this Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
